COMMUNITY MEETINGS ON FACILITY ISSUES
Fairfax County residents are invited to provide input for a long-term strategic plan that will help Fairfax County Public Schools prepare for critical facilities issues facing the school system in the next decade, including increasing enrollment, the availability of space to meet needs, and adequate funding to meet maintenance, renovation, and construction needs. The School-Board appointed Facilities Planning Advisory Council (FPAC) is developing the new strategic plan and encourages parents and all residents to participate in community meetings on:
Tuesday, May 22nd - 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Whitman Middle School Cafeteria, Alexandria
Robinson Secondary School Blue Cafeteria, Fairfax
The facilities strategic plan is driven by issues identified in FPAC’s careful evaluation of the current conditions and input from residents at a series of listening tours FPAC held in spring and fall 2011: space utilization (enrollment, capacity, and programs), operations and maintenance, capital improvement, community use, and communications. Those interested in attending any of the community sessions can register here .

SCHOOL BUDGET UPDATE
It’s time to make your voice heard about next year’s FCPS budget.
Dr. Dale’s proposed budget includes, among many things, a 2 percent market scale adjustment and a step increase for all eligible employees as well as a salary adjustment for custodian positions and the addition of 26 positions (2 million dollar budget line-item) specifically to address large class sizes. (http://fcps.edu/news/fy2013/bottomline/bottomline.html).
We know that many parents have been concerned about the large class sizes we see here at Haycock and the effects it has on our students and teachers. Others feel very strongly that our teachers and staff receive the salary increases in FY 2013, especially after the pay freezes that have been in place in the past few years.
We strongly encourage you to make your voice and concerns heard in the budget process. There will be public hearings on the budget on May 15 and 16. The speakers list for these public hearings will open on May 4. You may find additional information about signing up to speak at public hearings at http://www.fcps.edu/schlbd/meetings/requestspeak.shtml. In addition, you can send email to the School Board and its members – find contact information at http://www.fcps.edu/schlbd/members/bdmembers.shtml.

LEGISLATIVE ROUNDUP
Here are a few highlights from the education legislative action taken by the Virginia General Assembly during the legislative session that recently concluded. The General Assembly rejected bills that 1) would have repealed the “Kings Dominion” law that requires the first day of school to be after Labor Day, 2) would have allowed home-schooled students to play sports at their local high schools, and 3) would have eliminated tenure-style protections for teachers. The General Assembly approved legislation to require school boards to establish policies for keeping epinephrine pens at each school to allow a school employee to administer the medication to a student having an anaphylactic reaction.

PTA SUGGESTION BOX

Your suggestions and inventiveness make Haycock PTA a success. If you have ideas about how the Haycock PTA could make our school an even better place to be please complete a suggestion card and place in the PTA Suggestion Box in the Front Office.
Every event that the PTA does, every action that it takes, is the result of someone making the suggestion: “Why doesn’t the PTA do ...” Our school is blessed with many individuals who give generously of their time. Your suggestions on how to strengthen our community are always greatly appreciated.
